Essential before reading...

Learning about the author

As we know, before reading a book we need to learn about the author. That's why this week, we started reading a preparing posters about C. S. Lewis' life. He's the author of the book we're going to read in a couple of days: "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", a great book from the saga "The Chronicles of Narnia".

Here's more information for you to read at home:

http://www.cslewis.org/

http://www.cslewis.org/resource/chronocsl/

http://www.biography.com/people/cs-lewis-9380969#synopsis

Take down note of the information you need to finish your posters on Wednesday so that we work quite hard and quickly! We need to start reading the book! Aren't you anxious about it? I am!

Literature Assignment

Some questions about "The Witches"

Here are the questions I would like you to answer during the winter holidays. Remember not to copy the questions. Just write the complete answers, in a tidy way, to hand them in on Wednesday, 6th August. Be careful! Because some questions have two parts! And remember that you can use the book to answer all questions... that's great help!

1- Who was the author of the book? Write what you remember about his life.

2- Who was the illustrator? Which was his relationship with the author?

3- What is strange about grandma's thumb? Do we know what happened to it?

4- What do witches look like? (Write a full description!).

5- How did Ranghild Hansen disappear?

6- Which are the steps you have to follow to prepare the "Formula 86 Delayed Action Mouse-Maker"? (Write them in bullet points, as in a recipe).

7- How did Bruno's dad react when the grandma told him that Bruno was a mouse?

8- Draw the dining-room scene, in which witches are turned into mice.

9- Mention three things that grandma did to adapt her house for the boy, who was a mouse.

10- Did you like the story? Why/Why not? (Give a good, complete answer to this question).

I know you'll be able to answer all these questions. Good luck!

And happy holidays! Enjoy!

Squeeze your brains!

Think, think and think!

Today we worked a lot! Again, you also showed you're extremely good actors and actresses and we also did a 5x2 routine. The questions you could think of were highly creative!

Great job kids! I can't wait for Friday to know how the story goes on!

How disgusting they are!

Witches and more witches...

It doesn't matter if they are young or old... But witches are very similar! However, they also have some differences... And that's what you tried to write in the Venn diagrams:

Great job!
Miss Luchi.

Poor Bruno!

What will happen now?

Today we started predicting what's going to happen in the next chapter... Please, read the following two chapters so that we know how the story goes on!

A new recipe

We are great witches!

Today we had to create new, amazing recipes so that kids would not turn into mice, but into something different. You managed to create fantastically horrible recipes... with disgusting results!

Well done 5th form!

Miss Luchi.

Mice everywhere!

Acting out

Today you really surprised me and the teachers around because they didn't know what was going around... You were all mice! How nasty you were! But you were excellent actors and actresses who could use English in a very meaningful way. And most importantly, you showed feelings through your characters, which is something not very easy. Fantastic result 5th Form! Please, go on working this way! I'm sure it's the key to enjoy reading!

And... are you thinking about the new recipe? Don't forget about it!

The Witches

Reading is great fun!
I love our Literature lessons! Thank you for showing so much interest in the lessons and in the book. I enjoy the reading moments a lot with you. And you are making a great effort to read with passion and energy... and some of you seem to be real witches when you read!

See you on Wednesday kids! Hmmm... have you eaten chocolates today? If I were you I would be very careful tomorrow, at 9 o'clock. Let's cross our fingers so that you are not changed into a mouse! Hahahahaha!

Types of narrator

Let's revise a bit
Are you studying for our Literature test? Remember that it's on Wednesday!
Last week we saw different kinds of narrator. In order to practise, I want you to look at these examples and decide which is the narrator (first, second or third) in each paragraph. Write your answers as a comment!

Come on! Yo can do it! These are the extracts:

1. “When Mr. Botibol woke the next morning he lay quite still for several minutes with his eyes shut, listening for the sound of the wind, waiting for the roll of the ship. There was no sound of any wind and the ship was no trolling. He jumped up and looked out of the window.”
(A Swim, by Roald Dahl).

2. “There were six of us at dinner that night at Mike Schofield’s house in London: Mike and his wife and daughter, my wife and I, and a man called Richard Pratt.”

(Taste, by Roald Dahl).

3. “For young and old alike, a trip to the beach means relaxation, adventure, and a temporary escape from the worries and responsibilities of ordinary life. Whether swimming or surfing, tossing a volleyball or just snoozing in the sand, a visit to the beach means fun. The only equipment you need is a twelve-inch deep pail, a small plastic shovel, and plenty of moist sand.”
(How to build a sand castle).

4. “I was born in the working-class. Early I discovered enthusiasm, ambition, and ideals; and to satisfy these became the problem of my child-life. My environment was crude and rough and raw. I had no outlook, but an uplook rather. My place in society was at the bottom. Here life offered nothing but sordidness and wretchedness, both of the flesh and the spirit; for here flesh and spirit were alike starved and tormented.”

(What life means to me, by Jack London).

5. “Rub a little on the back of your neck, your forehead and your wrists before you start fishing, and the blacks and skeeters will shun you. The odour of citronella is not offensive to people. It smells like gun oil. But the bugs do hate it.”

(Camping Out, by Ernest Hemingway).

6. “When Jane and Elizabeth were alone, the former, who had been cautious in her praise of Mr. Bingley before, expressed to her sister how very much she admired him."

(Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen).

Playing with names

Meanings for names!
In Literature, we played with our names, using each of our letters to write a word that represents us in some way. You were really original!

"Freckle Juice" is over... "The Witches" are waiting for us!

Before starting reading...

We have been working on the author's biography. We looked for information about him.
Remember that before reading, learning about the author and his life is essential to understand what he writes about and the way in which he writes.

And something that is also important is to set our expectations before reading. And that's exactly what you did:

I hope we can read, analyse and enjoy the story together!

Miss Lu.

THE TWITS, by Roald Dahl

Today we have finished reading "The Twits" by Roald Dahl. It´s been a great experience exploring their beastly disgusting adventures.
What trick did you like the best?
